Genetically modified crops: a US farmer’s versus an EU citizen’s point of view

چکیده
EU citizen's point of view. Submitted to Acta Agric. Scand., sec. B] Genetically modified crops (GM 9 crops) have been widely adopted by American farmers. Mainly two traits: herbicide resistance and 10 insect resistance constitute the area with GM crops. The commercial success of these crops rests upon 11 benefits in farm management and more generally upon improved efficiency in production. European 12 population surveys continue to show widespread opposition to GM crops and other applications of 13 gene technology to food production. Danish focus group interviews reveal general concerns that seem 14 to form the basis for the negative perception of GM crops. The aim of the paper is to explain why 15 American farmers and European citizens adopt opposing attitudes to GM crops. It is argued that there 16 is a clear conflict of interests between the two groups. At present GM crops provide no genuine 17 benefits to the consumer, who is therefore unwilling to run even very small risks arising from the use 18 of gene technology in food production. European citizens also connect GM crops with intensive 19 agricultural practices, which are perceived as unsustainable. Here values may diverge, but the 20 discussion of sustainable agriculture is not primarily about GM crops: it is much broader. 21 22

The transatlantic debate over the use of genetically modified organisms (“GMO”s) as food products, with the US as a proponent on one side, and the European Union (“EU”) as an opponent on the other, is set to take center stage. The US has initiated formal legal action under the World Trade Organization Dispute Settlement System, charging that the EU violates several agreements of international t...

Introduction: Genetically modified plants species of plants are produced by the genetic engineering of agricultural science and the addition of specific genes in their genetic sequences with the aim of optimizing the product and creating desirable traits. This study examined the remains of Cry1A(b) and P35 genes in blood of rats fed with genetically modified rice. Methods: This study was exper...
متن کاملRegulatory standards for environmental risks: understanding the US-European Union conflict over Genetically Modified Crops
US (United States) and EU (European Union) approaches to the regulation of GMOs (genetically modified organisms) are often explained using the ideas of ‘sound science’ and the ‘precautionary principle’. These stereotypes, however, can be misleading. They can conceal conflicts within jurisdictions and important interactions between them. This paper avoids these ideas and instead analyzes conflic...
متن کاملItaly sets new hurdles for GM crops
The US and the EU may have put on a joint face at this month’s collapsed World Trade Organisation talks in Mexico, but disputes between them over genetically modified crops are deepening. Italy won the right to impose an emergency ban on genetically modified food products when Europe’s highest court intervened in the bitter dispute between Rome and US biotechnology companies. But Italy’s victor...
متن کاملRisk Perceptions of Urban Italian and United States Consumers for Genetically Modified Foods
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are defined as plant and animal products produced using scientific techniques that involve taking the genes from one plant or animal species and inserting them in another species to transfer a desired trait or characteristic. For agricultural producers, GM crops have led to reduced production costs, enhanced yields, and the potential for increased profits. ...
